Activities & Achievement

1. Activities of the SMPB:
  • To facilitate economic development by modernizing production of medicinal plants.

  • To strengthen infrastructure, extension, market and R&D facilities for development of medicinal plant sector.

  • To increase the cooperation and communication among Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAP) stakeholders responsible for the production, commercialization and product development.

  • Medicinal Plant Conservation Areas (MPCAs) being established to conserve MAPs in their natural habitats.

  • Community Knowledge Registers being developed to document traditional knowledge on medicinal and aromatic plants.

  • Sugandhit Doon Program launched for creation of awareness on use of aromatic plants.

  • To develop the state as an “Herbal Destination”.

2. Achievements:
  • Establishment of State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB) as an umbrella body for MAPs sector. Herbal Research and Development Institute (HRDI), Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP), Bhesaj Vikas Ikai (District Development Unit) and Forest Development Corporation are working in this sector.

  • There are 42000 registered farmers registered for the cultivation of MAPs

  • Establishment of Nurseries and free distribution of quality planting material to farmers.

  • Simplification of Transit pass process of MAP produce since 2004.

  • Implementation of Conservation Development and Harvesting (CDH) plan in the state.

  • Established 3 herbal Mandies: Ramnagar, Tanakpur and Rishikesh

  • Establishment of 187 Field distillation unit (FDU).

  • Training provided to >5000 MAPs cultivator.

  • Establishment of a revolving fund of Rs 50 Lakhs established for buy-back of aromatic oil.

  • MSP for 25 aromatic plant produce.

  • Implementation of Chief Minister Jari-Buti Yojna (since 2009

3. Cultivation of MAPs :
Cultivation of MAPs is being done by farmers in >15000 ha land.
4. Registered Farmers of MAPs:

There are 42000 registered farmers for the cultivation of 38 prioritized MAPs in the state. 

5.Turnover of MAPs:

Turnover of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants in the state  120 Crore .
